Silver Pines demo save transfer: does progress carry over?

No. The Silver Pines demo save does not carry over to the full game. Here is the developer's explanation, the timeline, and what to do instead.

Silver Pines demo save transfer: does progress carry over?

FAQ

Does Silver Pines demo progress carry over to the full game?
No. The developer stated plainly that the save will not carry, so the full game starts from zero on 8 October 2026.
Why won't the demo save transfer?
Because Wych Elm reworked parts of the save system after the demo launched, to make it future proof for patches. The demo shipped before that work existed.
When did the developer confirm this?
On 5 August 2026, in a Steam community thread that had been open since 30 July. An earlier version of the question from 4 June went unanswered.
Is the Silver Pines demo a prologue of the full game?
That is a player guess, not an official statement. One player assumed it while asking about transfers, and Wych Elm has never described the demo that way.
Is it still worth playing the demo before release?
Yes, but for practice rather than progress. Use it to learn the map, the save economy and the combat feel, and expect to replay that opening in the full game.

Does Silver Pines demo progress carry over to the full game?

No. Wych Elm has answered this one directly, and the answer has not changed since. Everything you unlock in the Steam demo stays in the demo.

Official source: developer reply confirming the demo save will not carry

This is the rare pre-release question with a clean, explicit developer answer rather than a community inference. If you are searching because you have a demo save you are attached to, the short version is that it will not be importable on 8 October.

What exactly did the developer say?

The reply came from knas, the Steam forum account that carries the developer tag and handles almost all of the studio’s public answers. The full statement was:

“Sorry, we’ve reworked parts of the save system to be future proof for patches, unfortunately we didn’t have that when the demo went live a few months ago so save won’t carry.”

That is the entire explanation. There is no partial transfer, no cloud import, no save editor path offered, and no promise of a migration tool. The phrasing also makes clear this was a technical decision made after June, not a marketing choice to push people into a fresh purchase.

Detail Answer
Does demo progress carry over? No
Who said so? knas, developer account, Steam community
When? 5 August 2026
Stated reason Save system reworked to be future proof for patches
Was a workaround offered? None
Thread it came from Steam discussion on progress transfer

Why can’t the demo save be imported?

The reason is versioning, not hostility. Wych Elm built the demo’s save system in time for the 1 June 2026 launch, then reworked parts of it afterwards so that future patches could change game data without invalidating existing saves. A save file written by the old system does not match the new one, and a mismatched save is worse than no save: it load-testing in the wrong state, missing fields, or crashing on load.

The same rework is why save reliability improves in the release build. Our Silver Pines saving guide covers what the finished save system looks like in play, including the payphone mechanic, the free autosaves at key story beats, and the free coin that sits in every phone’s coin return slot.

[!note] This is a normal pre-release situation Plenty of demos ship with throwaway save formats. What makes Silver Pines worth writing about is that the studio said so in public, in plain language, months before launch, instead of leaving players to discover it on release day.

How long did players wait for an answer?

Longer than they should have. The question was asked twice over two months before anyone official replied, which is why stale threads claiming the transfer is undecided still rank in searches.

Date What happened
1 June 2026 Demo launches alongside the 8 October release date announcement
4 June 2026 Player asks “Will the demo progress carry to the main game?” - thread here
June to July 2026 No official reply in that thread
30 July 2026 A second player asks again, assuming the demo is a prologue
5 August 2026 knas replies: save won’t carry, save system reworked
8 October 2026 Full game releases; everyone starts fresh

The first thread technically remains unanswered, which is a good reminder that absence of an answer on a forum is not evidence either way. The 30 July thread is the one with the definitive reply.

Is the Silver Pines demo the prologue of the full game?

Unconfirmed, and the evidence leans against the simplest version of the idea. The phrase came from a player, not from Wych Elm: the 30 July question read “i think the demo is a prologue so it would be nice”, and the developer’s reply addressed the save system without ever agreeing with the prologue framing.

There is a second conflict sitting underneath this one. Media previews from June describe a narrated dream sequence that opens the game, and one Steam thread is titled “The difference between demos? The prologue is missing and banding”, suggesting the public demo may not include that opening at all. The two reports have never been reconciled, and the studio has not described the demo as a cut-down prologue anywhere we could find.

[!warning] Do not repeat the prologue claim as fact It is a reasonable guess from the demo’s structure, but it is still a guess. The same goes for any claim that the demo is “the first chapter” or “the tutorial section” of the release build.

If the demo does turn out to be a slice of the opening, then players who have finished it will replay familiar ground on release. If it does not, it is a self-contained slice built for the demo. Either way, the save does not transfer.

What should you do with your demo progress before release?

Treat the demo as a rehearsal and the answer becomes obvious. The practical advice:

  1. Do not grind for carryover. Nothing you collect survives. Coins banked in a demo save are coins you will farm again.
  2. Do learn the map. Silver Pines is a metroidvania that gates progress behind tools, and the demo covers the diner, the town streets, Garth’s Pharmacy, Rodney’s General Store, the underpass and the Crimson Bear Motel. That layout returns. Our town areas and shortcuts page is the reference to keep open.
  3. Do practise the combat feel, and stop worrying about dying. The absence of a crosshair, the locked movement during attacks and the short stamina bar are deliberate. Try the combat guide while the demo is free.
  4. Do not delay buying because of the save. There is no later patch that restores demo progress, so waiting costs you nothing but launch-day context.
  5. Do take screenshots of puzzle solutions you worked out. Anything you solved by reading the environment, rather than typing a code, is knowledge that transfers even when the file does not.

That last point is the one real value in a doomed save. Silver Pines hides numbers in the world rather than in menus, and the demo is where you learn to read them. The demo puzzle codes overview explains why memorising a code is less useful than learning how the game hands it to you.

[!critical] The bottom line The demo save will not carry. Plan on starting the full game from scratch on 8 October 2026, and use the demo to build skills rather than inventory.

Does demo progress carry to Steam Cloud or other platforms?

Steam Cloud is supported for the release version, so your full-game save follows you between machines once you are playing the real thing. That does not change anything about the demo file, because the blocker is the save format rather than the storage location. Steam Cloud carries both saves; only one of them is compatible with the release build.

Two related limits are worth knowing. The demo is Windows-only and English-only, while the release supports ten languages and adds PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2. No console demo has been announced, so the transfer question only ever applied to the PC demo on Steam. The release date, platforms and price page covers the full platform list.
