What does a hip pouch do in Silver Pines?
A hip pouch adds two inventory slots. The demo calls the upgrade a hip pouch, a bag, or a backpack slot upgrade depending on who is writing, and the effect is the same either way: two more squares in a bag that fills faster than you expect.
Slots are the confirmed system. Weight is not. The store description and the developer commentary both talk about inventory space, and players describe counting slots rather than calculating encumbrance, so plan around a fixed number of squares rather than around kilograms you never see. The inventory guide covers the rest of the bag: the item box for storage, the fact that opening the bag does not pause the game, and why ammunition, healing and melee durability all compete for the same squares.
The practical value of two squares is higher than it sounds. In a demo where ammo is scarce by design and healing comes in three tiers, being able to carry one more stack is the difference between leaving a find behind and taking it with you. That is also why the community treats the pouches as a top-three missable.
How many hip pouches are in the Silver Pines demo?
Three answers are in circulation and we are not going to pick one for you, because no official count exists.
| Report | Claim | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Three pouches | Demo contains 3, for a total of six extra slots | Player post on the Steam forums |
| Two pouches | Found 2 secret inventory upgrades | Different player in a different thread |
| One pouch | Found only the one obtained at the end of the demo | Player responding in the same discussion |
The failure mode described most often is not that a player found one and stopped. It is that a player knew about both documented locations and gave up on one of them. One commenter put it precisely: they knew about the vent but never put it together that they could shoot it, and they found the last pouch entirely by accident.
The single most quoted line on the topic comes from a player who had run the demo three times without ever finding the extra pouches at all.
[!warning] The demo’s total is unconfirmed Reports of one, two and three pouches all come from players, and none of them comes with a complete map. The two sites below are the ones with publicly documented instructions. If a third exists, its location has not been published anywhere we could verify.
Hip pouch 1: the motel second floor broken railing
The first documented pouch is at the Crimson Bear Motel. The route, as described by players:
- Get into the motel and reach the second floor.
- Turn left at the top of the stairs.
- Walk along the balcony until you reach a section with broken railing.
- Jump the gap across the broken section.
- Keep heading left and vault down at the end of the walkway.
Step 4 is the part people miss. The broken railing reads as set dressing until you try to jump it, and nothing tells you the balcony continues past the gap. If you are looking for a landmark, it is the damaged rail rather than a door or a glowing item.
The motel is the demo’s densest optional-content region, so this pouch is easy to walk straight past while chasing something else. The Crimson Bear Motel page breaks the building down by floor, and the motel walkthrough puts the pouch into the order you would naturally hit it.
Hip pouch 2: the motel game room vent
The second documented pouch is also in the motel, in or near the game room, and it is the one that defeats most players.
- Go to the right side of the motel game room — the room with the BB gun shooting gallery.
- Look above you for a wooden vent grate.
- Shoot it with the revolver.
- Once the grate is gone, jump up and crawl into the opening.
The puzzle is not the vent. The puzzle is realising that the revolver can open the map. The same logic applies to padlocks elsewhere in the demo, and a developer acknowledged that the game does not teach it well, noting that the locked strongbox should probably sit closer to the gun because players keep missing it.
Bring the revolver before you go looking. Shooting the vent costs ammunition in a game where ammunition is the scarcest resource after money, and players who spent revolver rounds on padlocks early reported running dry later. The revolver location page covers where to get it and what is worth shooting; the short version is that wooden vents and padlocks are fair game, while concrete and rock are not.
The fenced platform near the pharmacy
There is a third location in circulation, and it comes from a single Reddit report, so we are labelling it as such. A player described an inventory expansion behind a fenced-off area near the pharmacy, in the upper-left region of the map, reachable by jumping across from a building roof rather than by opening the fence.
We could not verify this against a second report. It may be the third pouch, it may be a misremembered second pouch, or it may be a location that requires a tool the demo does not hand out. Our advice is to check it, because the cost of checking is one jump, and to treat its existence as unconfirmed rather than as the missing third of a set. The town areas and shortcuts guide covers what else sits in that part of the map, including the fenced areas that turn out to be scenery.
Why two extra slots matter so much in the demo
Because the demo is built to make you choose what to leave behind. The four scarce resources are money, healing, ammunition and melee durability, and three of them consume inventory space. Every find presents the same question: is this worth a square.
Two more squares changes the answer for a whole category of items. It is the difference between carrying a spare herb for the tunnel and drinking it early to free the slot. It is also the difference between carrying a key item you are not sure about and dropping it, which is exactly the behaviour Patch 2 later made impossible for certain key items.
That is why the hip pouch hunt is worth doing even though the pouches add no combat power. The key items page explains why dropping the wrong item could end a run, and the answer to a full bag is more slots, not fewer possessions.
Why you keep missing them
The most common description of this search on the Steam forums is not confusion about a puzzle. It is a player who has finished the demo two or three times without realising there was anything to find. The pouches are placed in architecture the game has already taught you to treat as background: a damaged balcony rail, a vent above eye level.
[!tip] Photograph the spot before you leave it The camera exists for exactly this problem. Take a photo of a hip pouch location, attached areas and any locked door you cannot open, then attach those photos to the map as your own markers. Players who finished the demo without finding the pouches consistently describe the same thing: they walked past, saw nothing worth remembering, and could not reconstruct where the route had been. The camera plus map combination is the most useful exploration tool in the game, and this is the situation it was designed for.
Patch 2 also helps a little here. The patch notes list scene visual updates that specifically make interactable objects such as ladders easier to identify, which lowers the chance that a climbable route reads as decoration. Ladders are not pouches, but the same readability problem applies to both.
Official source: Silver Pines demo patch notes — Patch 2 includes the clarity pass over ladders and other interactable scenery.
Do hip pouches carry into the full game?
No. Demo progress does not transfer, because the save system was reworked after the demo shipped and the developer confirmed the demo save format will not carry forward. Collect every pouch anyway: the search teaches you where this game hides its upgrades, and the full release is built on the same instincts. Our demo save transfer page has the developer’s exact wording.
